Choosing between Amboseli National Park and the Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most common dilemmas facing safari travelers to Kenya. Both are world-class destinations, but they offer fundamentally different experiences. Your choice depends on what you want to see, when you want to travel, and what kind of landscape inspires you.
Amboseli's crown jewel is the view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. The park is famous for its large elephant herds - over 1,500 individuals - and the dry, open landscape makes wildlife easy to spot. Amboseli is compact (392 km² compared to the Mara's 1,510 km²), meaning game drives are shorter and you can see a lot in a few days. The park is also significantly less expensive, with lower entry fees and more affordable accommodation options.
The Masai Mara, by contrast, is about the density and diversity of wildlife. As part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem, the Mara hosts the Big Five in impressive numbers and is the stage for the Great Migration from July to October. The rolling savannah grasslands are more scenic and varied than Amboseli's plains. However, the Mara is more expensive, more crowded during peak season, and requires more travel time from Nairobi (5-6 hours versus 3-4 hours for Amboseli).
