Packing for a Kenyan safari requires thoughtful preparation. The key is to be prepared for varying temperatures - early morning game drives can be surprisingly cold, while midday temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F). Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, olive) is recommended for game drives, though comfort should be your priority.
Essentials include a good-quality wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and insect repellent containing DEET. Binoculars are absolutely essential - a good pair (8x or 10x magnification) will transform your wildlife viewing experience. A lightweight rain jacket is useful even in dry season, as afternoon showers can occur.
For photography, a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a zoom lens (200-400mm is ideal) will capture wildlife at a distance. Bring extra memory cards and batteries - charging opportunities may be limited at bush camps. Don't forget a headlamp or flashlight, a reusable water bottle with a filter, and a small daypack for game drives. Leave dark clothing and camouflage at home, as these are reserved for military and rangers.
