6 Days Machame Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Adventure

6 Days

The 6 Days Machame Route — known as the Whiskey Route — is one of the most scenic and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers diverse landscapes, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and a rewarding summit approach via the southern slopes. From lush rainforest trails to alpine deserts and icy glaciers near the summit, this trek provides one of Africa’s greatest hiking experiences.

Led by experienced mountain guides and supported by trained porters and cooks, this journey combines adventure, safety, and comfort — ideal for both first-time climbers and seasoned trekkers.

Day 01 :
Arusha – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

After breakfast at your Arusha hotel, depart for Machame Gate (1,800 m), the starting point of your Kilimanjaro climb. Begin your trek through a lush rainforest teeming with tropical plants, giant fig trees, and colorful birds.
Pause for a picnic lunch along the trail before continuing to Machame Camp (3,000 m), where you’ll enjoy your first night under the stars.

Day 02 :
Machame Camp – Shira Camp

Wake up early to a warm cup of tea and panoramic views of Uhuru Peak. Today’s hike ascends through moorland vegetation with volcanic boulders and moss-covered trees.
Reach Shira Camp (3,840 m) in the afternoon, located on a beautiful plateau offering wide views of Mount Meru and the Shira Needles.

Day 03 :
Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Today’s trek helps your body acclimatize as you climb high and sleep low. Cross the Shira Plateau, reaching Lava Tower (4,600 m) — the day’s highest point — before descending to the scenic Barranco Valley (3,960 m).
Expect breathtaking views of hanging glaciers and towering cliffs.

Day 04 :
Barranco Camp – Karanga – Barafu Camp

After breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling yet non-technical climb with fantastic views from the top. Trek across rolling ridges to Karanga Camp for lunch, then continue to Barafu Camp (4,673 m) — your base for the summit push.
Get an early dinner and rest before the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 05 :
Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

At midnight, begin your summit attempt — the most challenging and rewarding part of your trek. With your headlamp lighting the way, slowly ascend to Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa!
Celebrate your achievement with sunrise views over the glaciers before descending back to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for a well-deserved rest.

Day 06 :
Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha

After breakfast, descend through the tropical rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 m), where you’ll sign out and receive your Kilimanjaro climbing certificate. Your driver will transfer you back to Arusha for a relaxing evening or onward travel.
